Development of an IoT solution for detergent supervision in industrial washing machines
Dupla diplomação dom a UTFPR - Universidade Tecnológica Federal do ParanáAutomation of industrial activities aim to improve the efficiency of the productive processes
while reducing costs and increasing safety. In industrial laundries, the detergent
level measurement is a key element for asset management, mainly due to the necessity
of maintaining a continuous flow of washing processes. Therefore, this work presents a
solution implemented in the industrial laundry reservoirs of Santa Casa da Misericórdia
de Bragança, in Portugal, using an Internet of Things (IoT) approach, which integrates
a Wi-Fi based measurement system, capable of monitoring and recording the detergent
liquid level from reservoirs in real-time. Thereby, a microcontrolled system was developed
to perform level measurements using an ultrasonic sensor, in which data is sent to a
database and, through a web based platform, the client can remotely access the measurement
results. In order to facilitate the physical installation of the developed hardware in
the existent setup, a custom-made enclosure was designed and 3D printed.A automação das atividades industriais tem como objetivo melhorar a eficiência de processos
produtivos, reduzindo custos e aumentando a segurança.

The mass loss process in dwarf galaxies from 3D hydrodynamical simulations: the role of dark matter and starbursts
Theoretical CDM cosmological models predict a much larger number of
low mass dark matter haloes than has been observed in the Local Group of
galaxies. One possible explanation is the increased difficulty of detecting
these haloes if most of the visible matter is lost at early evolutionary phases
through galactic winds. In this work we study the current models of triggering
galactic winds in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) from supernovae, and study,
based on 3D hydrodynamic numerical simulations, the correlation of the mass
loss rates and important physical parameters as the dark matter halo mass and
its radial profile, and the star formation rate. We find that the existence of
winds is ubiquitous, independent on the gravitational potential. Our
simulations revealed that the Rayleigh-Taylor Instability (RTI) may play a
major role on pushing matter out of these systems, even for very massive
haloes. The instability is responsible for 5 - 40% of the mass loss during the
early evolution of the galaxy, being less relevant at Myrs. There is
no significant difference in the mass loss rates obtained for the different
dark matter profiles studied (NFW and logarithmic). We have also found a
correlation between the mass loss rate and both the halo mass and the rate of
supernovae, as already reported in previous works. Besides, the epoch in which
most of the baryon galactic matter is removed from the galaxy varies depending
on the SN rate and gravitational potential. The later, combined to the
importance of the RTI in each model, may change our understanding about the
chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies, as well as in the heavy element
contamination of the intergalactic medium at high redshifts.Comment: MNRAS, accepte
Intumescente fire protection of cellular beams
Cellular beams are structural steel beams that are deeper than normal rolled sections
and have holes cut into their webs. As the web post failure may occur before the section
reaches the limiting temperature usually an increase in the fire protection may be required for
members with web openings in comparison to its equivalent solid section.
The aim of this work is to present an experimental study of unloaded solid and cellular beams
with circular holes in fire conditions with and without intumescent fire protection. These preliminary
tests are the basis for generating an elemental multi-temperature analysis (EMTA)
needed to assess cellular beams with intumescent protection as prescribed by the prEN13381-

Modeling the conversation with entity graphs and predicting each entity's centrality in the conversation provides additional information that improves the retrieval of answer passages for the current question. Experiments show that using random walks to estimate entity centrality on conversation entity graphs improves top precision answer passage ranking over competitive transformer-based baselines.publishersversionpublishe
Bio-Inspired Modality Fusion for Active Speaker Detection
Human beings have developed fantastic abilities to integrate information from
various sensory sources exploring their inherent complementarity. Perceptual
capabilities are therefore heightened enabling, for instance, the well known
"cocktail party" and McGurk effects, i.e. speech disambiguation from a panoply
of sound signals. This fusion ability is also key in refining the perception of
sound source location, as in distinguishing whose voice is being heard in a
group conversation. Furthermore, Neuroscience has successfully identified the
superior colliculus region in the brain as the one responsible for this
modality fusion, with a handful of biological models having been proposed to
approach its underlying neurophysiological process. Deriving inspiration from
one of these models, this paper presents a methodology for effectively fusing
correlated auditory and visual information for active speaker detection. Such
an ability can have a wide range of applications, from teleconferencing systems
to social robotics. The detection approach initially routes auditory and visual
information through two specialized neural network structures. The resulting
embeddings are fused via a novel layer based on the superior colliculus, whose
topological structure emulates spatial neuron cross-mapping of unimodal
perceptual fields. The validation process employed two publicly available
datasets, with achieved results confirming and greatly surpassing initial
expectations.Comment: Submitted to IEEE RA-L with IROS option, 202
Entre experiencia y estructura : sufrimiento social, identidades colectivas y justicia en Iris Marion Young
This paper analyzes the role of phenomenology in Iris Marion Young's model of critical theory through a discussion of the different strategies she mobilizes in articulating the notions of identity and social collectivities in Justice and the Politics of Difference (1990) and Inclusion and Democracy (2000). By reconstructing the debate Young had with Nancy Fraser during the 1990s, we seek to demonstrate that, although Fraser mischaracterizes Justice and Politics of Difference as representative of the “cultural turn” in social theory, her criticisms can illuminate some of the tensions and shortcomings of the text. Moreover, we argue that the emphasis in a structural-analytical strategy of argumentation, characteristic of Young's later work, can be traced back to the contentions formulated by Fraser. Nonetheless, it is sustained in a final step that Young never completely abdicated the phenomenological approach as a tool for social criticism. Although the argument of Inclusion and Democracy is developed primarily in a structural way, Young repeatedly mobilizes the experiences of social suffering and the demands for justice voiced by social movements as the basis of her large scale democratic proposals.
